Seven years after the widely celebrated Skies Unknown, Bandai Namco takes players back to the beloved fictional universe of Strangereal in Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve. Set in July 2029, the Federation of Central Usea (FCU) has collapsed under a sudden, devastating invasion by the Republic of Sotoa. With the military scattered and the homeland occupied, a desperate group of survivors on the aging, outdated aircraft carrier Endurance must keep hope alive.
You step into the cockpit as a silent fighter pilot who is pull aboard the carrier and given a legendary mantle: “Wings of Theve”. But behind the awe-inspiring title lies a heavy truth—the legend of the unstoppable Ace is actually a manufactured lie created to maintain morale. Backed by three new wingmen, you must now carry the weight of this symbol, fly against overwhelming Sotoan forces, and turn that propaganda into reality to reclaim your country.
Messe-Eindrücke: Beautiful Skies & Locked Frames
Getting hands-on with the preview build at Gamescom ’26, our immediate takeaway was: “Yep, this is pure Ace Combat.” It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but it polish it to a dazzling sheen. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the visual upgrade is nothing short of breathtaking. The volumetric clouds, hyper-detailed jet fighters, realistic cockpit perspective, and dynamic weather conditions (like raindrops trailing on the canopy) look incredibly crisp and realistic.
More importantly for a high-speed dogfighting game, the technical performance is outstanding. Even during frantic, screen-filling battles with massive explosions, countless missiles tracking targets, and heavy debris flying through the air, the frame rate remained locked and rock-solid. It is a visually stunning flight-shooting showcase that feels incredibly smooth in motion.
Deep Complexity vs. Unnecessary HUD Bloat
While the core dogfighting gameplay feels tight and responsive, we did notice that the game can feel unnecessarily complex at times. Rather than sticking to intuitive arcade controls, the preview build throws an overwhelming array of systems at the player. Managing advanced squadron wingmen commands, navigating highly cluttered HUD overlays, and configuring intricate weapon configurations can feel a bit bloated, potentially intimidating newcomers who just want a straightforward arcade flight shooter.
However, for seasoned veteran pilots, this complexity adds a rewarding layer of tactical depth. This is especially true for the game’s massive new multiplayer component: Ace Combat Online. Operating separately from the campaign with its own progression system, this online mode features a virtual Air Base lobby that can host up to 100 players. Players can form 4v4 squads to compete in PvE Co-Op Assault missions or dive into high-stakes PvPvE Co-Op Warfare dogfights with dynamic “Threat Level” systems—all with full cross-play support.
Our Verdict: A Highly Polished Return to the Skies
At its core, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is exactly what the series needs after a six-year hiatus. It is classic, unadulterated high-octane aerial combat wrapped in a beautiful next-gen package. While some of the gameplay elements and menus feel a tad too complex for their own good, the phenomenal technical polish, stable performance, and incredibly ambitious online features make it one of the most exciting releases of the year. Strap in: the dawning of next-gen dogfighting is scheduled for October 2, 2026!
