Ten to thirteen years after surviving the nightmare of Harran, legendary protagonist Kyle Crane is finally free. Having endured over a decade of brutal, dark experiments in captivity at the hands of mysterious scientists, Crane breaks loose into a changed world. Set in the lush, densely forested region of Castor Woods—a former rural European tourist resort now overgrown with vegetation and infested with infected—Dying Light: The Beast offers a tightly crafted open world full of natural landmarks, small villages, abandoned industrial complexes, and drivable 4×4 vehicles.
Originally envisioned as a story DLC for Dying Light 2 Stay Human, the scope grew so massive during development that Techland turned it into a standalone 18+ hour premium adventure. The game strips away bloated RPG mechanics in favor of the visceral, tense survival horror and gritty atmosphere that made the original 2015 Dying Light an absolute cult classic.
Hands-on Impressions: Back to the Roots with Unleashed Power
During our Gamescom ’24 presentation, Techland showcased a game that feels delightfully familiar yet refreshingly powerful. The atmosphere in Castor Woods skews distinctly toward a darker, Eastern European / rural woods aesthetic, contrasting sharply with the urban sprawl of Villedor. Parkour remains as fluid and vital as ever, but traversal is augmented by drivable 4×4 vehicles to navigate the dangerous forests and supply routes.
The absolute highlight of the appointment was seeing Crane’s new “Beast Mode” abilities in action. Years of gene-splicing experiments intertwined zombie DNA into Crane’s bloodstream. When activated, Crane unleashes savage, beast-like strength, tearing through hordes of infected with raw physical power, devastating ground slams, and ferocious speed. It turns horror into a blood-pumping power fantasy when night falls!
Solo Mastery, 4-Player Co-Op & Ultimate Edition Deal
While Dying Light: The Beast is crafted as a deeply immersive, narrative-driven single-player experience, players don’t have to face the darkness alone. The entire campaign features full up to 4-player cooperative multiplayer, allowing you and three friends to tackle Castor Woods, share resources, and outrun the night together.
Techland also delivered a massive gift to loyal fans: while Dying Light: The Beast will be sold as a standalone premium title, anyone who purchased the Dying Light 2 Stay Human Ultimate Edition (or Ultimate Upgrade) before the end of September 2024 receives The Beast completely free of charge!
The Verdict: The Dying Light Sequel Fans Have Been Waiting For
With Roger Craig Smith returning to voice Kyle Crane, a return to the dark atmosphere of the original game, and the thrilling addition of Beast Mode powers, Dying Light: The Beast is shaping up to be an absolute powerhouse. Whether you ride solo or hunt in a 4-player co-op squad, Castor Woods is primed to deliver one of the most intense zombie survival experiences of the generation.
