What’s the Game About?

When classic River City heroes Kunio and Riki get kidnapped, their high school girlfriends Misako and Kyoko don’t sit around waiting. Armed with brass knuckles, baseball bats, and an arsenal of stylish fighting moves, these two energetic heroines take matters into their own hands.

River City Girls combines classic 90s side-scrolling beat ’em up action with modern anime cutscenes, a banging synth-pop soundtrack, and lightweight RPG elements.

At first glance, the quirky tone, pacing, and mechanics might feel a bit unusual or slightly off-putting if you expect a barebones arcade brawler. Give it an hour, though, and the game unfolds its very own, irresistible charm. Buying snacks, gearing up with accessories, and especially the level-up progression—unlocking punchy new combo strings at local dojos—feels immensely satisfying and keeps you hooked.

The Couch Co-Op Vibe: Dynamic Duo Energy

Playing solo is fun, but running through River City as a duo is where the magic happens:

  • Complementary Playstyles: Misako hits heavy and slow, while Kyoko relies on agile, multi-hit strikes. Teaming up lets you juggle thugs between you like volleyballs.
  • Friendly Revives: If your partner gets knocked out, you have a short window to literally stomp the ghost back into their body before it’s game over.
  • Shared Screen Harmony: The camera follows both players cleanly, keeping the chaos readable and everyone in the action.
  • Watch Out for Friendly Fire (Toggleable): Leave friendly fire on for extra laughs (and accidental dropkicks into your buddy’s face).

Why It Belongs on Your Couch

  • Pros: Gorgeous 16-bit pixel art, energetic combat, satisfying RPG/level-up progression, and genuine laugh-out-loud dialogue.
  • Cons: Backtracking between map sectors can occasionally drag the pacing down.

The CouchCoop Verdict

If you love titles like Streets of Rage 4 or Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, River City Girls is an absolute blast for two players on the couch. It starts quirky, wins you over with top-tier style and progression, and leaves you wanting more—which makes us even happier that the follow-up titles are already out and waiting for our next co-op session!
