Hailing from the creative powerhouse of South Korean indie studio ABUTTON Inc.—a team of roughly 25 seasoned industry veterans with pedigree from smash-hits like Dave the Diver and Counter-Strike OnlineGuns & Dragons has been in active development for about two years. Set in a vibrant, highly explosive magitech fantasy world, the game combines the adrenaline of a first-person shooter with the high-stakes, run-based progression of a modern roguelite.

Players delve deep into dangerous caverns, mystical ruins, and ancient villages, utilizing guns, bows, and highly questionable, over-engineered arcane machinery to obliterate hordes of invading monsters. Whether playing entirely solo or together in a team of up to three players, Guns & Dragons offers a seamless drop-in, drop-out co-op experience where players can quickly join their friends’ sessions mid-run without breaking the tactical flow.

From 1,000 to 10,000 Slayers: A Playtest Phenomenon

At Gamescom ’26, ABUTTON gave us an exciting look at the current state of Guns & Dragons, following an exceptionally successful public playtest held just a few weeks prior. The developers originally expected a modest turnout of around 1,000 playtesters. Instead, they were completely overwhelmed by an avalanche of over 10,000 eager players! Impressively, the playtest build ran incredibly stable, requiring zero hotfixes throughout the event. Rather than rushing out new features, the 25-person team is currently focusing entirely on evaluating and implementing this massive wave of community feedback to polish core issues.

Our hands-on time with the current build—which functions as a vertical slice featuring three chapters and three massive boss fights—showcased extremely responsive, satisfying gunplay and fluid navigation. However, the vertical slice nature also highlighted areas that still need work. New players are easily overwhelmed by the sheer volume of magitech mechanics, and the lack of comprehensive tutorials makes the learning curve quite steep. The pacing of the runs also feels a bit uneven, as is typical for an early build.

Cramped Arenas, Colossal Progression Trees

One of the major takeaways from the recent playtest is the game’s spacing. During chaotic combat sequences, the arenas and rooms can feel a bit too cramped and overloaded, leaving very little room for dynamic movement and dodging. The developers confirmed that reworking level design to provide players with more breathing room is their absolute top priority moving forward. Fortunately, the loop of returning to your base between runs is incredibly rewarding. You can use gathered resources to expand your base and invest in a massive meta-progression skill tree, which unlocks both permanent stats/value boosts and stylish cosmetic upgrades.

On the technical front, multiplayer runs on a peer-to-peer, host-by-host matchmaking system integrated via Steam, meaning there are no dedicated servers. While there are no social lobby/hub worlds to wander through, the matchmaking is quick and efficient. For balancing, co-op play dynamically scales the challenge: when more players join, enemies increase in number and boast significantly higher health pools to keep the combat tense. While PC is the lead platform, controller support and robust aim assist are already fully functional, paving the way for a smooth console launch later on.

The Verdict: Raw Firepower with Giant Potential

Guns & Dragons is currently in a classic, unpolished-but-promising developmental stage. The core gunplay is excellent, the magitech weapon design is incredibly fun, and the meta-progression is vast. If ABUTTON uses their massive playtest feedback to open up the combat spaces, smooth out the pacing, and add welcoming tutorials for newcomers, this could easily become a co-op rogue-like champion. It is a long journey to its targeted 2027 release window, but this is one developmental trail we are absolutely staying tuned to!
