Set in the once-holy, now completely desecrated city of Gildenarch, players step into the heavy iron boots of a Nephilim—a legendary half-human, half-angel hybrid warrior. Forged as humanity’s ultimate weapon, you are charged by the Order of the Crimson Moon to reclaim the city ward by ward. In Gildenarch, a dark medieval fantasy prophecy unfolds where heavily armored knights clash in brutal battles against endless legions of skeletal warriors, horrific demons, ancient vampires, and rotting Hellgrowth abominations.
Unlike conventional, rigid Soulslike titles, Crimson Moon structures its dark fantasy campaign around repeatable missions and expeditions. While the overarching story is deep and emotionally driven, the game is built for dynamic, run-based replayability. Players can constantly refine their Nephilim builds, unlock rare weapons, craft legendary gear, and trigger powerful angelic transformations to obliterate hordes of undead enemies.
Hands-On Impressions: Fluid Combat on a Budget
At our Gamescom ’26 hands-on play session, we finally got to experience ProbablyMonsters’ dark fantasy brawler firsthand, and we were thoroughly impressed. Visually, Crimson Moon is an absolute stunner. Despite its budget-friendly AA pricing, Gildenarch’s decaying cathedrals, towering ramparts, and blood-soaked streets are rendered with incredible fidelity. Even during chaotic battle scenarios where dozens of skeletal warriors crowded the screen, the frame rates remained exceptionally stable and smooth.
The combat controls are wonderfully responsive. Grounded in classic tactical melee mechanics, fighting emphasizes precision, dodging, and perfectly timed deflections. Striking down enemy squads feels weighty and incredibly satisfying, while unleashing stylish, visceral executions and explosive celestial transformations gives the gameplay a delightfully chaotic, powerful flow that makes every skirmish a blast to play.
A Soulslike Built for Everyone
The most outstanding and refreshing feature we witnessed during our preview is the game’s approach to difficulty. While Crimson Moon retains the demanding tactical combat, elite encounters, and epic boss fights characteristic of the Soulslike genre, it completely rejects the “one-size-punishes-all” mentality. The developers have packed the game with scalable difficulty levels and multiple gameplay modifiers.
Whether you are a seasoned veteran looking for a merciless, razor-sharp challenge, or a casual co-op duo wanting to enjoy the dark atmosphere and story without banging your head against a brick wall, the game has you covered. By choosing various difficulty presets and adjusting enemy configurations, Crimson Moon lowers the entry barrier significantly while preserving the core mechanics that make melee combat fun. It’s a masterful design choice that respects the player’s time and skill level.
The Verdict: Unbeatable Value for Dark Fantasy Fans
With a standard price point of just $19.99, Crimson Moon is arguably one of the best value-for-money Action-RPGs of the year. It proves that you don’t need a premium price tag to deliver gorgeous graphics, satisfying combat, and great story-driven depth. Whether you crusade alone or team up with a partner in the optional two-player online co-op mode, the city of Gildenarch is absolutely worth reclaiming. The hunt has officially begun, as Crimson Moon launched yesterday, September 1, 2026, on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S!
