Developed by Confiction Labs, Riftstorm plunges players into a dark “real-world+1” universe where cosmic horrors, mythic entities, and secret occult wars lurk just beneath the surface of everyday reality. Players step into the tactical boots of “Weavers”—elite operatives working for the secret Mythic Protocol. Armed with experimental firearms, supernatural abilities, and high-tech equipment, your mission is simple yet deadly: investigate anomalous rift activities, contain otherworldly outbreaks, and exterminate cosmic monstrosities before they consume mankind.
At its core, Riftstorm is an isometric, top-down looter-shooter action RPG infused with roguelite loop mechanics. Designed from the ground up for up to 3-player online co-op (as well as a challenging solo mode), squads drop into high-risk combat zones to fight swarms of terrifying mythics, gather weapons and field upgrades, and decide how far they dare to push their luck before extracting.
Hands-On Impressions & Roadmap: Fast Runs & Big Plans
During our Gamescom ’24 appointment, we got a clear look at the current state and roadmap for Riftstorm. Having already completed closed playtests on Steam, the developer is gearing up for a major Public Playtest in early October 2024, followed by a playable public Demo toward the end of 2024. The full Steam Early Access launch is slated for 2025, backed by a major creator-driven marketing campaign.
While the game is currently focused on PC on Steam—and runs smoothly with full Steam Deck compatibility—console releases for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and potentially mobile platforms are planned down the road. In the current test build, online multiplayer relies strictly on direct team invites rather than a public lobby system, though dedicated matchmaking and lobby hubs are already in active development.
Bite-Sized Deployments, Endless Replayability
One of Riftstorm‘s standout design choices is its accessible run structure. Each deployment is designed for a crisp, action-packed 10 to 15-minute play session. Levels are procedurally constructed using randomized combinations of handcrafted environmental tiles and objective blocks, ensuring that no two missions feel identical. The final game will feature a story-driven campaign mode, specialized challenge levels, and an intense horde mode to test even the most coordinated squads.
Between deployments, players engage in a deep meta-progression system. Upgrading Weaver abilities, fine-tuning character loadouts, and managing weapon gear ensures that every run—whether successful or ended by an untimely defeat—contributes to your overall power.
The Verdict: A Promising Co-Op Monster Hunt
Riftstorm delivers a fantastic, highly addictive mix of fast-paced shooting, tactical synergy, and cosmic horror flair. The bite-sized 10-15 minute mission length makes it perfect for quick evening sessions with friends, while the deep loadout customization and procedural environments offer huge replay value. Keep your eyes peeled for the public playtest in October 2024—this isometric looter-shooter is definitely one to add to your Steam wishlist!
