In the deep, dark corners of a dystopian sci-fi universe, endless conflict over corporate domination and resources has unleashed a new nightmare: the DarkSwarm. This fast, aggressive, and highly intelligent alien force is consuming colony after colony. Left with few options, the corporate elites deploy the ultimate tool for dirty work: Death on Demand (DOD), an agency supplying bioprinted, highly specialized on-demand mercenaries who feel no pain, fear, or remorse.
This is where you and your squad step in. DarkSwarm is a top-down tactical action-stealth game designed around a core co-op loop. Played either online or offline with up to four players, the game relies on team coordination, precise roles, and tactical movement. Every mission drops your squad into highly hostile, infested territory. Your primary objective: complete the contracts, fulfill your goals, and manage to pull off a successful extraction. Survival isn’t guaranteed, and corporate HQ doesn’t care if you make it back—as long as the job is done.
Hands-On: Elite Squad Coordination & Procedural Swarms
During our exclusive business appointment at Gamescom ’24, we got our hands on the early pre-alpha build of DarkSwarm to test the highly anticipated 4-player co-op extraction mode. Right off the bat, we can confirm: this game is an absolute blast on the couch! We coordinated our roles, combined our unique skills, and immediately felt the tense, satisfying loop of entering a dark, alien-infested hive.
One of the standout features of the demo was the procedurally generated levels. Every mission area is constructed randomly from modular pieces, ensuring that rooms, pathways, and enemy spawn locations are completely different on every run. You can never memorize a path; you must always stay alert, watch the shadows, and adapt on the fly.
The classic extraction loop shines here: your squad always has a primary goal to tackle, but the real challenge is fighting your way back to the extraction zone once the hive is alerted. The swarm reacts aggressively to your tactics, forcing players to dynamically cover angles and work in absolute sync to get out alive.
Four Distinct Classes & Needed UI Polish
Team composition is critical in DarkSwarm. The game features four unique classes that perfectly complement one another:
- Assault: The heavy-hitter engineered to break through enemy defense lines.
- Engineer: Deploys tactical technology, defensive turrets, and keeps the team moving forward.
- Support: Stabilizes the squad with healing and essential ammo resupplies.
- Infiltrator: Silently eliminates high-priority targets before the swarm even detects your presence.
While the core gameplay loop and gunplay already feel incredibly satisfying, we have to address the elephant in the room: the user interface. As this was an early preview build, the UI is still very basic and lacks visual polish. It can occasionally feel cluttered or unpolished during the heat of intense battles. However, the developers at Bitfire Games are fully aware of this and have made it clear that refining and beautifying the UI is a major focus before they head into Early Access.
Verdict: A Co-Op Highlight in the Making
Even with its rough edges and unpolished UI, DarkSwarm is shaping up to be one of the most promising co-op shooters on our radar. With the publishing backing of co-op legends Ghost Ship Publishing, the tactical depth, procedural variety, and tense extraction mechanics make it a prime candidate for legendary game nights. Co-op fans should definitely keep their eyes on the Q1 2026 Early Access release!
