You have different game modes, a lot of them playable in coop, a few more in multiplay….

Adventure > Is the Story mode, you have an over World map, like in Super Maio on the SNES and the levels, are races, challamnges, Rival races, or sometimes just items to unlock, so maybe more like the Overworld in Mario Bros 3. (Playable with up to 4 Players Coop)

Championship > This is the traditional cup races series Mode, where you select your Cup (Tracks), your Horesepowers (Diffuculty/Speed), real Difficulty and some more settings and race for the trophie. (Playable with up to 8 players Coop)

Race > Just quick Race with COM or friends. (also including Challang levels) (Playable with u p to 8 players)

Competion > You can tweek all the settings to create your own competion to play with. (Playable with up to 8 players)

Collection > Where you see all items, skins and more already unclocked and see also the qulifications to unlock more.

 

During the Adventure – Story Mode you will not only race against COM, or against a rival to unlock it. You might also unlock items for teh races and upgrades for you car.
There are also challang levels, where you need to get though a lap in time, or collect a certain amount of stuff on your way.
