When corporate toxicity spills over and HR stops listening, it is time to take matters into your own hands! Developed by Wemat Games and published by We Made A Thing Studios, Box Knight turns the nightmare of adult office life—burnout, soul-crushing corporate bureaucracy, and toxic work environments—into a hilarious, action-packed battleground.
Set within a sprawling office tower that has fallen into literal and metaphorical darkness, the game tasks players with fighting their way up floor by floor after closing time. Once-ordinary coworkers have mutated into grotesque corporate monsters, and only a brave employee clad in DIY cardboard armor and wielding improvised office weaponry can cleanse the building and restore peace to the workplace.
Gamescom Impressions: Surprisingly Tactical Cardboard Combat
During our appointment at Gamescom ’26, we got to experience Box Knight in action, and we were immediately struck by how surprisingly deep and tactical the combat feels. Far from being a mindless button-masher, the side-scrolling beat ’em up mechanics demand precise positioning, smart timing, and tactical decision-making.
Enemies cannot simply be blindly punched into submission. Certain corrupted coworkers are immune to aerial strikes, others require specific piercing attacks to break their defense, and jump-attacking explosive hazard enemies will backfire instantly. This forces players to continuously adapt their strategy on the fly. Visually, the bold comic-book art style gives the entire game a distinctive, highly charming look—complete with over-the-top execution moves, cardboard helmets, and office cubicle arenas gone wildly wrong.
Office Upgrades, Couch Co-Op, and the Path to Consoles
Between floors and runs, Box Knight offers robust RPG progression. Players can level up, acquire new cardboard weapons, equip specialized abilities, and customize their corporate crusader with stylish uniform cosmetics. Persistent meta-progression ensures that even when a run ends in defeat, earned resources can be invested in permanent stat boosts and new gear unlocks for future attempts.
Designed as a co-optional experience, Box Knight shines brightest in couch co-op mode, where two players can team up locally to conquer the office hierarchy together. The game officially launched on PC via Steam on August 25, 2026, where a free playable demo is also available for curious players. While console versions (PlayStation, Xbox, Switch) are not yet officially scheduled, the developers confirmed that console ports are very much on the table if PC sales perform well!
The Verdict: A Satisfying Cardboard Beatdown
With its clever corporate satire, unique comic-book visuals, and surprisingly tactical combat, Box Knight is a fantastic indie brawler that turns everyday office frustration into pure co-op entertainment. If you are looking for a fun, humorous beat ’em up to play with a friend on the couch, jump onto Steam and give the demo or full game a try!
