Genre: Open-World Dark Fantasy Action-RPG

Release Date: September 3, 2026
Event: Gamescom ’25

14th-Century Europe: A grim age stained by plague, bloody conflicts, and the looming shadows of the Black Death. As humanity weakens, ancient horrors rise from the dark. Vampires step into the light, claiming the freedom and power denied to them for centuries. In the midst of this chaotic shift, you play as Coen, a young man cursed and transformed into a “Dawnwalker,” forever walking the thin line between the world of day and the realm of night. Your ultimate quest is to save your family, but how much of your soul are you willing to sacrifice?

The game’s core gameplay revolves entirely around Coen’s dual existence:

  • During the Day (Human): Coen moves through the world using traditional weapons like swords and daggers. He must rely on tactical approaches, stealth, and clever magic spells to survive.
  • At Night (Vampire): When the sun sets, Coen’s vampiric form emerges in full, terrifying glory. Armed with devastating supernatural powers like wall climbing, teleportation, and aggressive blood-based attacks, the gameplay shifts toward brutal, fast-paced combat.

This duality carries over to character progression as well. Through three rich, distinct skill trees (human perks, vampire powers, and shared active/passive abilities), you can fully customize Coen’s traits to perfectly suit your favorite playstyle.

Hands-on Impressions: A Breathtaking Presentation in a Gothic Church

At Gamescom ’25, we had the unique privilege of getting a hands-on presentation inside one of the most atmospheric B2B booths of the entire event. The developers styled the preview area as an eerie, dark medieval church—the absolute perfect backdrop to experience the gothic world of The Blood of Dawnwalker.

To showcase the game’s radical player freedom, Rebel Wolves demonstrated a major story mission solved in two completely different ways. The tactical versatility is stunning: we witnessed fluid, combo-driven battles where teleports, wallruns, and breathtaking slow-motion combat blended seamlessly. Whether you prefer acting as a silent shadow or cutting through enemies with direct steel, the world adapts dynamically to your actions.

Stunning Unreal Engine 5 Visuals & Strategic Time Management

Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the game features highly detailed gothic environments, realistic lighting, and haunting atmospheric effects that bring its dark fantasy setting to life. Exploring the handcrafted open world—from bustling medieval towns and neblige swamps to ancient ruins and eerie forests—is an absolute joy. The transition from sunlit days to shadowed nights visually underscores Coen’s split nature.

Adding strategic weight to your choices is the unique 30-day time system. Time only advances when you complete major missions, forcing you to prioritize who to help or ignore in your race to save Coen’s family. This clever design introduces pressure without making the gameplay feel rushed or frustrating.

Our Verdict: The Next Great Dark Fantasy RPG

With Konrad Tomaszkiewicz (the Game Director of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt) leading the development, Rebel Wolves has delivered an ambitious narrative sandbox that successfully channels the storytelling depth of The Witcher and the gothic vampire themes of Vampyr, while building its own unique identity. The Blood of Dawnwalker is hands down the most exciting vampire game we’ve played in years. Mark your calendars: darkness falls on September 3, 2026!
